Sun Microsystems developed an office suite that allows you to create documents, presentations and spreadsheets, and save them in Word and Excel, and Powerpoint formats.   You can also use it to open all MS files.   Go to www.openoffice.org you can download for free (no strings attached).   One advantage over MS Office is that you can save documents as PDF files, which can come in handy from time to time.
